Knitted Animation

I came across this video while catching up on Ravelry this morning.  Over 700 knitted frames of animation to portray a Canadian winter.  They did use a knitting machine, I would too!

It’s Thursday!

These are the titles you get when my brain is fried!  Today I’ve been busy winding, photographing, and uploading new stuff to the store.  The Fiber Friday post will actually occur in the morning, since it is all written.  (Yay for drafts!)

Here are some pictures of the gardening I did the other day. Click to go where I have notes all over the pictures as a tour!
The Hostas

The Flower Garden

The hostas were all in a giant clump where you see the bigger clumps (I may still divide that area, and put them in the back yard).  There’s some perennials planted behind the hostas, but you can’t really see them.  Next year they will be nice and big like my Salvia, Bleeding Heart, and Columbine that are in the garden to the left.  I put in the stone steps this year, too, which precipitated the moving of the hostas.

Now, a story for you.  Last night, my beautiful young boy, in his playful ‘are you ready to go yet’ goofing around (read exuberant and annoying), decided to push the button on the doorknob of my studio and close the door.  Him not knowing much about locks, was surprised to note that he could not open it again, and came to tell me so.  Me, hands in navy blue dye, did not hurry to open it, since I didn’t need to get in there right away.  Fast forward to this morning.  Yay, an order….lets get it ready to ship!  Oh yeah.  The door.  No problem, just poke something in it and the button pops like on all the other doors in the house.  Um, nope.  Funny, I got it open the last time when my daughter locked the cat in there.  More poking turns to pounding.  Still no opening.  I’m about to dismantle the doorknob or take the door off the hinges.  Grrrr.  Then I looked a bit closer.  The pushy thingy had a slit, like for a small key.  I found something to fit in there and twisted.  Pop.  Easy as pie.  I was as pink as the yarn I shipped.

Anyway, I’ve wound off a cone of the new bamboo yarn into sock sized skeins, and am having fun playing with them.  I’ll be dyeing the first yarn for sock club next week, and I’ll have some nice variegated colors for you in the bamboo blend.

When it rains, it pours….

You may (or may not) have noticed that I’ve been ‘out of action’ for awhile.  Here is what I’ve been doing!

Our family took a little trip for my dd’s birthday.  We saw a show, and enjoyed time in the hotel pool (all to ourselves, since it was mid-week).  When we got back, there was a choir gig, a gigantic box of yarn and roving (yep, it’s here!!), and plenty of gardening to do.  We also scoped out the local May craft fair in an effort to decide if we wanted to be in it next year.

Today?  Today I dug up giant clumps of hosta and divided them to make a huge border area near our ‘cliff’.  I’m hoping the tough roots and corms of hosta will help hold our slope up, plus it just looks much nicer than the weeds that were there before.  When I finished, I really felt like I had accomplished something, and was ready to sit and veg the rest of the evening.

Ah, but dh brings home the long awaited music for the June Pops concert.  So, we got out our trumpets and practiced that for an hour, which we will need to do every night until the concert.  Then I needed to check my email (still trying to get caught up on my yahoo groups, since I was away from the computer for 2-3 days).

Well, Pam at Yarny-Goodness is running out of ‘A Slice of Heaven & Earth’, so I need to make more.   I closed the sock club today, and I need to get started winding those long skeins.  I also have a custom order waiting.  So, I’m glad I got some gardening done today, since it looks like I won’t have much time the rest of the week!

I do have some great yarns that are dyed, they just need to be wound and photographed, so I hope to have something for you to drool over on Fiber Friday this week.  In the meantime, I hope you too are enjoying the spring weather.

Fiber Friday, May 9

Ah, at long last, some new yarn pictures for you to drool over!!!

Below is Green Goddess, which is a blend of yellows, greens, blues, and navy on 100% merino wool sock yarn.  The yarn is kettle dyed randomly, so any patterning that occurs will change up rather frequently.

Green Goddess on 100% Merino

Next is Dappled, which is hand dyed on Superwash Merino & Nylon Sock yarn.  Several shades of green are applied randomly to create a semi-solid type yarn.

Dappled - on SW Sock

Flamingo is one of my favorite colors, and this time I’ve hand dyed it on 100% merino wool sock yarn.

Flamingo on 100% Merino

Grape Ape is a mixture of deep purples, both red and blue leaning, and is on Superwash Merino & Nylon sock yarn.

Grape Ape - on SW Sock

Secrets was quite hard to photograph, so this photo is adjusted a bit to show you the underlying colors.  The overall yarn is more black than the picture shows, but as you move it in the light, you see these bits of eggplant, navy, golds, rusts, browns, etc poking out.  Definitely a beautiful black!

Secrets - on SW Sock

I’ll be trying to get these up on ThePaintedTiger tomorrow (there’s an auction we are going to, so who knows when!!), or you can email me if you must have something. Only one of each this time, except ‘Secrets’ has 2, and the second will be on Etsy next week sometime.

This is the last week for sock club sign-ups, and my bamboo blend yarn for that is coming in late next week. Yay!  I also ordered an entire bump (that’s about 22 pounds) of Corriedale wool top.  I can’t wait….and wish I could invite you all here for a dyeing party!

Tiger Find Tuesday – Silver!

This week I bring you some silver items!   First we have ‘Leaf Tips Ring with Sapphire’ by AwesomeSilverJewelry

I love how the ring is beautiful in simplicity, and has the color of sapphire that I like.   AwesomeSilverJewelry also has pendants, earrings, and bracelets.

This little cat is from bordeaux.

The kitty is a remnant of salad days for Bordeaux, and is due for the ax after a tour on Etsy.  If you can think of a use for him, please adopt him!  You will also find enameled pendants and earrings,  plus neat wired animal pendants such as fish and dragonflies.

An essay on balance…

I frequently am asked ‘How do you do it all?’, and also wonder that about some of my friends.  Well, for myself, the answer is ‘I don’t’.  Many things I turn down because now is not the season for me to be doing that.  The things I do take on, I generally don’t do all at the same time.  That’s why you haven’t heard from me for a few days.

Last week, I heard back from a local shop that wants to carry my scarves, which she discovered when I sent a couple to a charity auction.  She wanted to show them off at Dutch Days, especially since it was forecast to be quite chilly on Saturday (it was).  So, I dropped everything and knit up as many scarves as I could for her.  In the future, it won’t be as labor intensive since I’ll be replacing sold inventory instead of an entire stocking, but I wanted to do a good job for her and get a good variety of the local school colors for her.  Here’s a picture of the booth….you can see the scarves on the back wall by the man in the red coat.

Scarves at Dutch Days

So, that was what I was doing instead of skeining yarn and doing Fiber Friday pictures!  I do have scads of yarn dyed up, just need time to process it!  Luckily, it is supposed to be raining later this week, so gardening is not going to be competing with FF this week!  Unfortunately, that means my garden isn’t going to be planted this week, either.  I’m building a second set of terraced beds, so it isn’t like I can go stick some seeds in the ground and be done with it.  I will probably get some lettuce and peas going in the beds I do have though.

Anyway, after all the scarf stuff, my next project was playing trumpet for a local performance of John Rutter’s Gloria.  Here’s the Third Movement of it.  My husband played, too, which was fun.  (Really, I should say that I got to play too….he’s an amazing trumpeter!)

Today, I’m working up my order for the summer sock club, and today is the last day for striping yarn pre-orders.  I have choir rehearsal tonight, and the girls have our monthly ‘meeting’ on Tuesday.  I turned down a couple of other things to do this week, just because we’ve been so busy lately.  I need to breathe!

Of special note are this Tabby Cat, an amazing ‘Gone Fishing’ sign, and this great Iris, which I had to feature because my favorite colors are purple and green!

Sock Club and Pre-Orders of Striping Yarns now open!

Thank you, newsletter subscribers who have already joined the sock club or ordered striping yarns!  They are now available on my website to the general public.  Pre-orders of the striping yarns will be taken until May 4, after that they will go dormant until I’ve dyed up the stock I purchased, and the price will be a bit higher.  It seems that bamboo blend yarn just costs more.
