Almost here…….

Yup, it is nearly here.  I have a number of skeins all dyed up, just need to wind them back into normal size (unless you happen to have a 40+ foot swift at your house!).  I need help with them, so I will get them done as soon as family cooperation allows!  As soon as they are listed, I’ll buzz the newsletter with the link (it’ll be exclusive to newsletter subscribers for 24 hours).  If you miss this first batch, I will make more, so don’t fret!!

Have a great Memorial Day weekend!

Reflections….

It’s amazing how time flies. It seems like yesterday I brought home my first child, yet she turned 9 today. I’m so grateful to be along for the ride of her life. She is turning out to be quite the young lady. She’s the go-to girl at church…she’s been asked to be part of the honor guard for bible club, and last week was asked to hand out flowers for Mother’s Day. She has an amazing sense of humor. Like many girls, she loves horses, or perhaps more accurately, ponies. Her grandmother found the perfect gift…a jewelry box covered with horses, and a horse goes around when the lid is opened. She also received (from us) a box set of the Kaya American Girls set. (Did I mention that she is a voracious reader?) She also is a budding artist. She draws, she colors, she paints, she cuts things up to make 3-d art. She likes to help me with the yarn. She has been asking for a camera for a long time now, and I was finally able to find just the right (used) digital camera for her. She watches me take so many pictures, and it was amazing to watch her start playing with the camera, then go back and delete most of the pictures and get serious about composition. Already she has some unique art shots. Now, she is still a kid, and aggravates me plenty….but for today, I’m enjoying my newly minted 9 year old. Hug your kids. They grow too fast.

Contest Update…

Hello! I’ve combed through the (many!!) entries in the ‘name the Silk and Silver Yarn’ contest, and then let the family vote on it. Overwhelmingly, we chose……

Silver Lynx

Congratulations to Nutella for winning!  If your entry was not selected, you should have received an email with a special thank you code.  If not, please contact me, I’ll be glad to pass that on to you.  (It was a lot of emails addy’s to put into the bcc….I fully expect that I missed someone, or I’ll be labeled as a terrible spammer and half of them will be eaten by the great sludge monster of the internet!!) Thanks again for entering my little contest!!

Fiber Friday!

Hi!  I have a huge update for you of hand dyed Corriedale fiber and Tabby Merino Lace yarn!!

To find these quickly in the shop, click the NEW ITEMS button in the left sidebar.

CMY Party – This is what happens when you let primary colors loose to play!

CMY Party - Corriedale Top

Kelp – Turquoise, teal, and green blend on this soft corriedale top fiber.  A big 8oz braid.
Kelp - Corriedale Top

Black Forest Cake – Yummy chocolate and cherries abound!

Twilight – This is just a beautiful transition between day and night….from yellows to reds and pinks to deep blues.  This will be really fun to spin.

Mimosa – Pink Champagne and Orange Juice?  Yes, please!

Lime Mojito – Or perhaps something a bit stronger?

Here’s the lace yarns.  Tabby is a two ply 100% merino lace, 880 yards per 100 grams.  There are two of each of these, plenty for a large lace shawl.  Most are hand dyed in a semi-solid method to resist pooling and showcase your amazing knitting or crochet stitchwork.  This yarn would be fun as weft in fine weaving, also….in case you caught the Cricket loom bug from a certain Stephanie.

Sunset – (Ok, so this one will pool or zag, or something….but isn’t it cool?!?)

Sunset - Tabby Lace

Citron Twist – Delicious lime with twists of blue and yellow.

Carmel Fudge (need I say more?)

Impatiens – A basket of these is a traditional Mother’s Day gift in our household.

Coral – (this batch is sold…if you love it, ask and I’ll make more!)
Sabrina - Tabby Lace

Apricot – gentle peach with subltle areas of orangy yellow which adds depth and life.

Thanks for taking a peek at the update!  I’ve had a couple of inquiries about my summer striping yarns, and rest assured…I am working on them!  This year, I am going to make a big batch and release them first to newsletter subscribers, so if you aren’t on the newsletter and want dibs, please do sign up in the sidebar —>

Contest – Name the Silk & Silver Yarn

ETA:  The Contest is over…..click here for results.
I’d like to introduce to you my new yarn.  It is a blend of Merino/Silk/Nylon and REAL SILVER!  It’s a sock yarn, but has great drape (not to mention those sparkles), so would also be really fabulous for scarves and shawls. 4 new colors of Silk & Silver

The problem? I need a name for the yarn base. I’m looking for something that will be catchy and memorable, and fits in my Tiger/Animal theme (although that isn’t crucial), and is unique. Yeah, I know….tall order. To clarify, I need to name the yarn base, not a particular colorway.  Some of my existing yarn bases are ‘Tabby’, ‘Tiger Twist’, ‘Tiger Cub’, ‘Siberian Worsted’, ‘Wooly Mammoth’, Cougar, and ‘Panda’.  As I said, it doesn’t HAVE to be a tiger/big cat name, just somehow fit in the shop theme, or be so cool that I just HAVE TO name it that! Pop down to the comments section of this post, and submit your ideas. If I choose your idea (you must be the first to post that name), you’ll win a skein of the new Silver & Silk yarn dyed just for you!  (So be sure you leave a valid way to contact you when you leave your comment.) My newsletter peeps got first peek and naming rights.  Wanna be in the loop too?  Get the newsletter by signing up in that brown box in the upper right  of the page.  About once a month; and contains sneak peeks, first dibs, and exclusive offers. P.S. – Those 4 yummy semi-solids are newly listed….click on the pictures to go right to ’em!

P.P.S – Sign ups are nearly over for the Flora and Fauna Fiber Club by Fiber Baristas.  6 months, 6 different dyers.  Exotic fibers, different preps, plus a new contest each month.  Pamper yourself! PPPPPSSS – Have a great weekend!  I’ll take suggestions for the yarn until Thursday, May 7 around 3pm CDST, and announce a winner the next week.  Don’t be afraid to get science geeky on me, I do have a Biology degree, ya know! 🙂

What’s on the Wheel this Wednesday?

Ready for more drum carding photo blogging?

This time I’ve taken some mill ends from my Brown Sheep box.  This is the same fiber that is spun into Lamb’s Pride.  85% wool, split between mostly red, and a bit black, and 15% white mohair.   Some of this pile has very long fibers, and other areas are handfuls that were cut from the machines.

 Original Red Mill Ends

Here are some of the longer fibers.

Waste from Mill Ends

Above is a pile of the shorter fibers that the licker in caught.  All is not lost, I’ll set the kids to making beads with it, or otherwise felt it into something useful.  Below is the whole set up…..going clockwise….Drum Carder, original fiber, short fibers, finished batts.

Carding

Batt close up.  I sent these through only once since they were previously combed fibers.  I wanted to keep streaks of the different colors.

And finally, here is the first bobbin of bulky singles.  I have enough batts ready to spin another bobbin, then I’ll ply them up for nice bulky yarn.
