Show and Tell

Ready for a picture marathon?

November was NaKniSweMo (National Knit a Sweater Month), and I tried to participate in the effort (along with other fans of Stash and Burn).  I worked away on my Einstein Sweater, and did manage to get the skirt portion completed.  I’ll count that as victory, and the project is set aside for now so I can complete my contract knitting. The needles are pointing out my progress in November. Although I don’t hand knit so slowly any more, I just didn’t pick up the needles perhaps as often as I could have.

Speaking of contract knitting, here’s what I’ve turned out on the machine in the past couple of weeks:

I have 6 more scarves in my queue, but plenty of room if you still need a last minute Christmas gift. If you order by December 15th, you’ll receive it in time for Christmas!!

This scarf was done as a super special order for a firm in Chicago.  This is a wool scarf, and it is just fun!

Cheers!

Hello!  I haven’t blogged in so long I could barely remember how to do it!  Anyway, I haven’t fallen of the face of the earth, but it HAS been very busy crazy around here.  I’ll try to catch you up!

Mr. Tiger, until the last 2-3 years, was a 5-8th grade band director.  In October, we heard the happy news that 4 of his former students made the Iowa All State Music Festival.  It is a great accomplishment to make it, and generally schools don’t get more than a couple of students in.  Clinton this year had 6 students in, 5 in band, and one in choir.  We also had one alternate for choir.  My husband was well thanked for his contribution in starting these kids on their instruments, which we both appreciated.  We were fortunate to be able to attend the concert, which was in Ames.  It was really phenomenal, with the band, choir, and orchestra all performing college level works.
Iowa All State Band
I didn’t find out how all the kids placed, but one was second chair trombone, and another first chair on bass clarinet. The other two were clarinet and tuba, plus a flute player that attended the ‘other’ middle school.
Iowa All State Chorus

And here is the choir, 600+ strong.  The young lady that made it from Clinton also sings in RiverChor with me (as do two of the boys in the band), so it was great to have a personal connection to these outstanding young people.

The kids were at the grandparents, and they said don’t hurry back, so on Sunday we meandered our way back through Iowa, and ended up in the Amanas.  Many of the shops are tourist stuff, but amid them are true artisans and items you can’t get elsewhere.  We had a good time enjoying beautiful fall weather, and no crowds since it was the weekend before Thanksgiving.  Our final stop in Amana was at the Woolen Mill.  I was quite impressed with the looms (which unfortunately do not run on Sunday), but not so excited about their products.  The cotton was nice enough, but the wool was very scratchy.  I guess I’m spoiled having my hands (and feet) in soft merino and corriedale all day!

I was looking for a new blanket for our livingroom.  I have one of those acrylic pile things right now, and it isn’t cutting it.  My chair is next to the exterior wall and window, and the chill just permeates.  They did have a selection of Pendelton blankets there, and those are very nice.  I’m now on a stalking quest to get one for a price I can afford….right now the one I want is $275.

I’ve babbled enough for this post….so I’ll start another one for current knitting status!

Picture of the Day!

It’s been a busy week or so around here, and I’ll regale you with pictures and tales of knitting and yarn soon.  For now…..my friend’s little one was looking out the window saying “I see, I see, I see, I see, I see!!!”

Oh Deer!

Yup he saw!  This buck and a doe hung around our backyard most of the day.

Scarf, Scarfs, Scarves

Note:  As of 2011, I no longer make these scarves.  Thank you.

It’s that season again, so it seems like a good time to mention the original side of ThePaintedTiger….. custom knit striped rugby scarves.  How is this done, you may ask?  You simply choose two colors from my list of Red, Burgundy, Orange, Yellow, Gold, Green, Hunter, Blue, Navy, Grey, Brown, Cream, White, and Black (other colors may be available upon request), choose your fringe length, and check out.  Your scarf will be knit and in the mail to you within 10 days of order.

This is the BIG scarf, and measures about 7 inches wide and 80 inches long.  This particular one was requested in Gryffindor colors of Harry Potter fame.  All of my scarves are knitted in a thick rib knit and then carefully finished so the ends don’t flare out.  Then I add your choice of fringe….none, 3″, or 7″.

BIG Wizard Style Scarf

As you can see, the scarf itself is about knee length on an average person, and the fringe hangs around the shins.  It makes the custom scarf perfect for wrapping, and the BIG size can even be used to wrap the head if needed.

Like the length but not the width?  I offer the LONG Custom Scarf.  These knit scarves are 5 inches wide and 80 inches long.  This particular Navy Blue and Gold (Maize) scarf was given as a Christmas gift to a Michigan fan.

Finally, I have the Regular Custom Knit Scarf.  The size is 5 x 70 inches, which puts the scarf around mid-thigh on most people (before fringe).  It’s the perfect length for car coats, or if you like your scarf for decoration instead of functionality.  This yellow and black combo was very popular last year as a scarf for Hufflepuff, Iowa Hawkeyes, and Appalacian State.

Ok, really finally…..if you have something else you would like made, please do contact me to see if I can make a custom custom order for you.  For example, I made this scarf for a Dr. Who fan who wanted something more managable to wear for everyday:

So…..if you don’t knit, or do knit but are overwhelmed and need some help, do remember ThePaintedTiger Custom Knit Striped Scarves for your holiday gift giving, for birthdays, or your favorite University or Sports Team fan!

A chuckle for you!

Ran across this today on Ravelry, thought I’d post it for my readers, too!

Show and tell!

It’s Monday, and time for show and tell!

I finally caught a picture of that groundhog/woodchuck:

Woodchuck, groundhog, whatever.
She’s on the neighbor’s lawn here, and seems content over there. I filled in the hole, and so far so good.

I finished my Forest Glade socks made with my Tiger Supersock yarn. I should have made the ribbing deeper, but as is they kinda ruffle, which is interesting.  I wore them all day on Saturday.  Much nicer than cotton socks!  Next I’m going to do something in a semi-solid and do a flatbed sock so I can try some patterning and/or cables.  There are really not the plethora of interesting patterns for the machine knit sock as there are for hand knit socks.

And here is progress on my Einstein Coat:
Einstein Progress

I admit it is going slowly.  I’d knit a row or two and my right hand would just HURT, so I knew I was doing something wrong.  I’ve watched some videos and read a few books and have modified my style.  Still slow, but not painful.  We have another doctors appointment this week, so I’ll get a good hour down and back, plus waiting room time….maybe I’ll catch up to my ‘quota’.  I’d like to wear the thing before it gets too cold outside to use it as a coat.

Speaking of coats….I joined the Coffee and Chocolate (oh, and yarn too) swap on Ravelry.  While shopping for the important items, I happened by a rack of coats.  Some people collect shoes….well I collect coats.  I did have a gap in my winter coat line up (them kids grew my hips right out of my favorite coat), so I rationalized myself into looking.  It’s usually safe to do so, since I’m notoriously picky and frugal.  Well, I found this lovely coat, and snatched it right up.
My new coat

How could I not?  It’s Anne Klein.  It’s just green enough to bring out my eyes, but brown enough to not be loud.  It has overstitching which is very cool.  The buttons are chunky.  The cut is flattering.  It’s 60% angora, 40% wool in a pile, making it lovely to pet, and gloriously warm.  It was 50% off.  I told my hubby I’d take it back if we couldn’t afford it, but I think he shredded the receipt which I will take as permission.  Now I just need to shorten the sleeves and knit some fabulous accessories for it.

Have a great Monday, and stay tuned for dyed goodies later this week!
