The best laid plans of mice and men….

Or should I say woodchucks and squirrels?

It’s been a crazy couple of weeks around here, so I’m going to give you a nice pictoral of the action in lieu of a yarn update this week.

First, we had this:
A mysterious mound of dirt on the steps
I built these steps this spring, and have shown them to you before. This day, there was a HUGE pile of dirt on them. Uh, that isn’t supposed to be there! Closer inspection reveals this:
Nice...um...home there!
Plus an amazingly bad smell. We have a mamma and baby woodchucks (or groundhogs) that roam in the woods, but have decided to start looking for a good place to hibernate this winter. Under my flower garden is out, no matter how cute and furry you are. I tried to catch a picture of the culprit, but she is quite quick for all her chubbiness. I am a bit concerned that they are doing this so early…are we in for a doosey this year?

To add to the animal insanity, my kids went out to play on the trampoline, and were greeted by this mess:
Trampoline destruction
This was done in various degrees to all 4 net supports, and there are little claw marks all up and down them. We pieced the foam back together and wrapped in thick black tape. Hasn’t happened again. I’m guessing it was squirrels being rather frisky. It might have been a full moon, too…..

Such unexpected interruptions have become the norm around here, so I’m going with the flow. We have doctors appointments and testing to be done (Mr. Tiger has strange headaches), and we don’t know what will be found. This is why I’m glad that my yarn business is so forgiving. I’ve dyed a ton of yarn in the last few weeks and got them most up on the site, and have a bit still laid back to post. I love being able to easily rearrange my schedule and support my husband.

I’m still shipping promptly, and scarf season has started. I’ll be dyeing this week for sure…the first shipment of Opposites Attract Sock Club go out on next Friday.

Anyway, to keep myself busy in the car and in waiting rooms, I’m started more serious hand knitting.
Here’s the finished version of that handspun scarf I was working on:
Completed Home Spun Scarf

And then I visited the local library, and found Sally Melville’s book about the Knit Stitch. Within it is a pattern for the Einstein Coat, and I must have it. Well, most of it. No bat wings for me, so I’m going to make the pattern more complicated and do set in sleeves. I can chart it easily with the software I have for my knitting machines, so it should work out well. I chose this Cascade yarn called Victor.
Yarn for my Einstein Coat
The color is ‘sand’. I didn’t read the description on Webs very well, and was surprised to find my superwash merino had 30% acrylic in it. Oops. It is still pretty soft, and I know it will improve with washing, as most acrylics do. I’m nearly finished with the first skein, and at this rate I’ll be done with the skirt portion of the coat in about a month. Maybe we need more doctors appointments? (Kidding!) I’m not real impressed with the claims of great stitch definition due to the yarn being cabled. It seems to me that it just makes the yarn splitty. If I like the coat when I’m done, I’m considering spinning for the next one. Yes, it is boring doing garter stitch all the time, but relaxing and unstressful, too. Nothing wrong with mindless knitting!

New Yarn!

Here’s what is ‘fresh from the dyepot’ this week.  I’ve been concentrating on filling out my selection of Tiger Twist colors.  If you haven’t tried this yarn base yet, you are in for a treat.  This 100% Superwash Merino Wool yarn is specifically spun just for making socks.  It has a tight twist, and is a bit overplyed to make it very sturdy and amazingly springy.  It will also lend great stitch definition to your projects.

First up is Cascade.  It is a blend of deep pine green, browns and tans, and a splash of aqua/teal.

Cascade - Tiger Twist

Next is Bed of Roses.  It has crisp greens and perky pinks.

Bed of Roses - Tiger Twist

This next one I had some trouble naming, but my friends on Ravelry helped me out!  This is Suede and Sapphire, and is mostly browns, gold, and just a splash of stunning blue.

Suede and Sapphires

Antique Rose has gentle linen tans, a soft green, and gentle burgundy.

Antique Rose - Tiger Twist

Winter Morning has soft blues, greys, and a bit of buttery sun peeking through.

This one is on supersock….Cranberry is a saturated red just right for the holidays.

Cranberry - Tiger Supersock

Limeade is on my merino lace, and is a refreshing semi-solid to show off your pattern.

Sage - Merino Lace

I’m also trying to fill out some colors of semi-solids.  This week I did sage and pale purple.  Each is available on Supersock and Tiger Twist.

Now I’m back to the studio to hand dye up another batch of yarn and fiber just for you!

Music, food, and knitting!

Last weekend, we attended the Quad Cities Symphony’s Pops Concert. The program was mostly the music of John Williams (so, of course, utterly fabulous). This year the concert was held in the baseball stadium, since the floods earlier this season tore up LeClaire Park, where it usually is held.
Quad Cities Pops Concert
This concert is quite the event. It is basically upscale tailgating. I was very suprised they allowed the tradition to continue in the ball stadium, but there were people set up all over the diamond.  We arrived a bit late, so found ourselves on the concourse.  It turned out well….we had a corral for the kids, and when it started raining after intermission, we were already under a roof.

Hand spun scarf

I enjoy concerts, but more and more I find myself needing something to DO.  I guess I multitask so much I must do it in my free time, too?!?  So, I brought along my skein of hand spun, and got this far on a scarf.  The problem…..I used half the yarn already, and if I use the rest I’ll have half a scarf.  So, a-froggin’ we shall go, and I’m going to make a skinny scarf.  It really wants to be a scarf.  Seriously.
Darth Vader & Storm Troopers at the Pops

After intermission, the Star Wars segment of the program came up, so guess who showed up?  There were bounty hunters, sand people, and other various characters roaming the stadium, too.  Too bad there wasn’t anyone impersonating Harrison Ford in Star Wars OR Indiana Jones.  Mmmmm.
Fireworks at the Pops

At the end of the concert, they played the 1812 complete with cannons, and then Stars & Stripes, Forever with fireworks.  Not a bad show, although short, but the first time my kids had seen live fireworks.  They were quite thrilled, and it was fun to watch them.

So….if your local community has a Symphony with a Pops concert, do come out, bring your food & beverages, and have a great time.  The Clinton Symphony’s concert is in early June, and I was lucky enough to play on it this past year….it was very fun, and we hope for even better turn out this year.

Yarn and Fiber Update…oh my!

I know it has been awhile since I’ve posted new yarn and fiber, so I hope this will appease you!

8/23 Update for ThePaintedTiger

New this week are the Fillet of Sole yarn….it’s a double stranded knitted flat that I’ve hand painted.  You knit two at a time toe up, and when you run out of yarn you are done.  I’m still in a bit of an experimental mode on these, so expect some good deals on these early ones.

I’ll be popping these up on ThePaintedTiger as fast as my fingers can go this afternoon.  I’m also shortly to announce the new sock club.  Thanks for bearing with me, I’m back into my full blown schedule now and you should be hearing and seeing more from me.

The reveal…..Extreme Bedroom Makeover

Nearly everyone who was to see the room in person has been here, so now I can share my before and after pictures!

Before:
Before - Angle A
Before - Angle B

You will note the mismatched dressers, the shelves attempting to hold my sweaters and other items, and the general hodge-podge mess.  (And the wallpaper….oh my head!!)

Before & after on dressers

Here are the dressers I bought for the room.  I refused to pay a fortune for pressed board with a picture of wood on it, so I bought these DIY real wood dressers from a home store for $99 each and painted them with colored polyurethane for a deep reddish brown color.  I love them!  I then bought some boards and had my FIL cut them (thanks!), and built these two shelving units and the bridge.   Voila, display space!!  I mounted strip lights under the bridge for reading, too.  (Oh, and see the lights hanging down there?  Yup, a ceiling fan where there was no fixture at all….yippee!!)

After - Angle A

Here’s the other view….I bought ‘bed stilts’, and moved all my sweaters and off season items to under the bed, which allows us to close the closet.  I bought those cool embroidered kimono panels from a gal on Ebay, and found this fantastic bamboo roller shade at the home store.  It fit EXACTLY right.
After - Angle B

The pictures above were done with lights on and flash.  In truth, the room is kept much darker….more like the picture below.  It is cool and calm in there, I love it!

The ambiance

If you’d like to see some other pictures, do click on any of these and visit my flickr photostream.  Thanks for letting me share my project with you!

Michael Phelps is my brother.

Yup, that’s my big secret.  Ok, quit scratching your head.  My brother, Michael Phelps, is a computer programmer in Des Moines, Iowa.  He can swim, but more in the ordinary, keep yourself from drowning, kind of way.

The family name does add some interest for us to the Olympics though (not to mention people suddenly being able to spell and pronounce our name….so often misgiven as Phillips), so it’s been fun rooting on my ‘bro’ in all these races.  Turns out that he’s a pretty cool kid, too.  This article is a good one, if you don’t know much about him.  Congratulations, Michael!!

As part of the Olympics, Ravelry has been hosting the ‘Ravelympics’ with punful events such as the Sock Put and WIPs Wrestling.  Having a serious issue with over-commitment, and just coming off the marathon room remodeling (I’ll show pics tomorrow….it turned out great!), I decided to not enter officially.  I have, however, made a few items.

Rainbow Socks knit with Tiger Twist

These socks are on my new ‘Tiger Twist’ base yarn.  I really wanted to get a pair of socks knit to show how far the yarn will go, since the yardage (365) seems a bit short to sock knitters.  I’m pleased to report that I made these size 9 socks with 1×1 ribbing, and if I measure from the pointy middle of my ankle bone, that cuff goes 6 inches.  I used a toe up pattern, and it’s as simple a pattern as could be (Penny Sock), but it is quite enough yarn.  I had about a yard total leftover.  I plan to make a bunch of double stranded flats of these, and paint ’em up…..’Fillet of Socks’, or ‘Fillet of Sole’ I’ll call ’em (your opinion is welcome, especially if you can think of something more clever!!!)  I have to say that I’m very happy that I felt the need to make this pair of socks…..they are the first I’ve knit for myself.  Now that I know this easy pattern, I may whip out a few more…….

Hand Spun Yarn
I’ve also been working on this hand spun yarn.  I dyed this roving awhile back, and had planned to ply it with pearls and glass beads.  I got the yarn single and beads out today and held them together, and the glass beads were just too aqua, and the single too green.  I love the colors of each, but not together.  So, I plyed the single end to end as is.  I think it turned out great, and I’m going make something for myself out of it.  There are about 111 yards.  I think I’ll dye up something a bit more pale aqua and green and white and ply the beads with that.

So now I have to think up some new projects to work on during the Olympics.  The wheel is up, and I have plenty of roving, so spinning I think is the event for tonight.  Hope you are enjoying your own project!

Extreme Makeover: Bedroom Edition

You may be wondering why it is Friday, and there are no yummy hand dyed yarn or fiber pictures.  Well, I’ve been a little busy.  My husband has been away taking some classes, so it seemed the best time to have some fun and make over our bedroom.  It is so much easier to do if the furniture is not in the room, and it just seemed nice to not make him sleep in the living room.

Why the need for this makeover, you may ask…….

Wallpaper

This wallpaper!!!!   Giant foam roses and leaves all over the place, and pastel city.  Definitely does not go with my black and red Japanese stuff.  I lived with it for a year and a half while I revamped some more public areas of the house, but it must go.

It didn’t want to go, however.  Very tenacious paper.  I scheduled one day to get the paper off and the walls scrubbed (I’m hearing singing……  ‘three hour tour, a three hour tour…’) but it instead turned into three days of very hard work.  I finally had to peel each stinking rose and leaf off by hand, then I could get the paper soaked enough to get off.  The crew below helped me quite a bit.  They were very interested in spraying, scraping, destroying, and being allowed to make a huge mess by throwing pieces on the floor.  The novelty of being able to stand on a ladder was compelling, also.

The help!

Here’s a bit of home archeology for you.  Our home is a late 50’s cross between a ranch and a chalet (?!?!!!!), and was decorated in the favored colors of the time, turquoise and dusty pink.  The bathroom still has the pink fixtures and turquoise tile (I’m getting those puppies sprayed white as soon as I can afford it!!), the undercoatings of all the other rooms (and the inside of the kitchen cabinets) is dusty pink, and it seems our bedroom used to be turquoise.  Oh my eyes.  Someone saw the light and repainted most everything cream.

Room archeology....

I got some primer up yesterday, and will be doing paint today.  I’ll pop up a pic of the finished product next week, and maybe some fiber pictures, too.  I have some I dyed ahead so I could work on this project, but I’ve been too involved with wallpaper destruction to do pictures.
